EXCERPTS FROM WITH LOVE AND GRACE
A Couple's Memoirs
From Harry: I was born December 21, 1931 in the small coal-mining
town of McIntyre in western Pennsylvania. . . . In later years Grandma remarked that it had been a very cold and
cloudy day when I came into this world. And I used to tell her, "Those same clouds are still following
me today." And Grandma would reply,
"If they are, it's probably your own fault".
From Grace: My father was a hard working man. He started fixing small electric appliances. (Yes, you fixed them in those days!) He opened a small store and within 5 years moved to a larger store.
From Harry: The outdoor toilet was probably my first lesson in survival: "Just hold on tight to the sides of that toilet to keep from falling in."
From Grace: My brother began to cry, I looked around and saw everyone was crying. I said to myself, "I guess I should cry, too." I didn't understand what 'died' meant.
